Gli anziani in questi tempi di crisi sono i primi a rimetterci, insieme a tutte le altre fasce più deboli.
La miseria è brutta e spinge molti a raccogliere avanzi di cibo e a rovistare tra gli scarti per recuperare la frutta o la verdura. Questo è il nuovo modo di fare la spesa.
Gli anziani che non riescono a tirare a fine mese: donne e uomini soli di 70, 80 anni, oppure marito e moglie, che non ce la fanno con la pensione minima, o comunque esigua, a sbarcare il lunario fra affitto, bollette, medicine, spese varie. Potrebbero magari chiedere aiuto ai figli, ma si vergognano.
E le loro storie sono spesso da brivido. L’emergenza sanitaria ha colpito maggiormente la terza età, tutti quei vecchietti che già stentavano a soddisfare i bisogni della vita quotidiana.
Chi non ha il coraggio di avvicinarsi alle bancarelle va a prendere carote, mele, pomodori nei rifiuti: è merce bacata, ma pur sempre commestibile. Si tratta di un piccolo esercito di pensionati indigenti che recuperano gli ortaggi per strada. Ma quello che colpisce è la dignità di queste persone, ordinate e gentili.
Eppure alla fine della giornata il cibo invenduto nei mercati è tanto. Quello che si butta – e non è certo cibo scaduto – potrebbe ricoprire il fabbisogno di qualche anziano che proprio non ce la fà a procurarsi da mangiare a sufficienza.
Quante storie ancora si sentono in televisione su questo argomento. A volte sentiamo di agenti delle forze dell’ordine che generosamente fanno una colletta con altri colleghi per comprare la spesa a qualche anziano senza possibilità che magari ha chiamato il numero di emergenza perché non aveva mezzi di sostentamento e nessuno che lo aiutasse.
La povertà nella popolazione anziana è dunque un vero e proprio allarme sociale. Lo Stato deve intervenire per non lasciare abbandonati a sé stessi coloro che sono le radici e la storia del nostro Paese.
